Spyros Sioutas

Professor

Spyros Sioutas was born in Greece, in 1975. He graduated from the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department (CEID), School of Engineering, University of Patras, in 1997. He received his MSc and Ph.D. degrees from the same Department in 2000 and 2002 respectively.

He joined the faculty of the “Informatics Department” of Ionian University in November 2006 as an assistant professor of “Database Systems”. In December 2012 he was elected as an associate professor of “Data Structures and Databases” in the same department. Also, from June 2013 to December 2017, he served as a Vice President and Legal Representative of the Research Committee of Ionian University.

He is currently (2018 –  ) a Full Professor of “Data Structures and Big Data Management Systems” in Computer Engineering and Informatics Department (CEID) (School of Engineering, University of Patras). His current research interests include Algorithmic Data Management, Spatio-Temporal Database Systems, Distributed Data Structures, and P2P Overlays, Cloud Infrastructures, Indexing, Query Processing, and Query Optimization.

He has published over 150 papers in various scientific journals and refereed conferences (amongst others SIGMOD Record, Algorithmica, Theoretical Computer Science, Computer Journal, Data and Knowledge Engineering, Journal of Discrete Algorithms, Distributed and Parallel Databases, Journal of Systems and Software, Artificial Intelligence Review Journal, International Journal on Artificial Intelligence Tools, Information Science, Neurocomputing, Knowledge And Information Systems, Information Science, ACM Computing Reviews, TLDKS, ESA, ICALP, ISAAC, DEXA, PSD, SAC, AIAI, EANN, CIKM, MDM, PODC, ICDT/EDBT, SODA, CCGRID, ALGOCLOUD, SIGMOD, SIGKDD e.t.c.) and he has more than 1500 citations.

In 2002 he was selected to attend the Postdoc Program on “massive data sets” in BRICS (Basic Research in Computer Science) department, University of Aarhus, Denmark.  In 2005, he has been a visiting researcher at Kings College, University of London (research domain: String Algorithmics and I/O complexity). He has also been a visiting researcher in MADALGO (research domain: “Deterministic Data Structures over P2P Networks”), Aarhus, Denmark, in 2008. He has 19 years of working experience as a Developer, Software Tester, Database Administrator and Project Manager at Computer Technology Institute (Research Unit 5), MMLab and ISD Lab.
